Tax guides for delivery and rideshare drivers

Each guide answers one question a driver actually has about their 2026 federal taxes, cites the IRS source for every figure, and links to the calculator that does the arithmetic. They are written for US self-employed drivers on DoorDash, Uber, Lyft, Instacart, Grubhub, Amazon Flex, and similar apps.

How to use these guides

If you are new to self-employment, read them in the order below: first what forms to expect, then how to pay during the year, then what to deduct and keep records of, and finally how it all lands on your return. If you are mid-year and worried about a specific problem, jump to the relevant guide.

State rules differ, so we also publish state-by-state tax guides for drivers.

Every figure is for tax year 2026 unless a guide says otherwise, and the worked examples come from the same engine as our tax calculators, so the text and the calculators never disagree. If you spot an error, tell us on the corrections page. Our editorial policy explains how we check sources. These guides are general information, not tax advice.

Every federal date for drivers: estimated payments, 1099 forms, the April 15, 2027 deadline, extensions, and the July 1 mileage switch.

Platform guides

Each platform reports your pay differently. These guides cover the forms, tips and mileage details for one app at a time.

DoorDash Taxes for Dashers

Where the 1099-NEC lives in the Dasher app, the separate tips and mileage emails, why the form follows deposit dates, and a worked example.

Uber

Uber Driver Taxes: 1099-K, 1099-NEC, and the Tax Summary

Gross versus net, what the Tax Summary lists (fees, tolls, online miles, tips), and how rideshare tips fit the tips deduction.

Uber Eats

Uber Eats Taxes for Couriers

Same Uber documents, different tip rules: delivery tips under TTOC 804, merged versus separate accounts, bike couriers, and a low-income example where income tax is zero.

Lyft

Lyft Driver Taxes: Annual Summary, 1099-K, 1099-NEC

Which Lyft payments land on which form, why the mileage figure on Lyft’s own page is out of date for 2026, and a part-time example with a W-2 job.

Walmart Spark Driver Taxes

What Walmart says about the 1099, why your SSN is on it, tips inside the total, and why you must build your own mileage record.
