About GigTaxHQ

GigTaxHQ is a set of free tax calculators and plain-English guides for people who earn money delivering food, groceries, packages, and people through apps.

Why this site exists

Hi, I'm Jin Jeong (a pen name; I prefer to keep my personal life separate from the site). I delivered full time from 2019 to 2026 in Vancouver, Canada. At the peak, a good month brought in around C$10,000. These days a month is closer to C$4,000.

What hurt more than the pay drop was tax season. Nobody withholds anything from app payouts, and I did not put money aside. At filing time I owed a large bill in one shot: income tax plus both the employee and employer share of pension contributions, the Canadian version of what Americans call self-employment tax. I paid a lot more at once than I ever would have if I had saved a slice of each payout.

The frustrating part is that the bill was predictable. The math is not secret; it is just spread across tax forms nobody shows you when you sign up for an app. So I started building calculators that do the math up front and tell you, in one number, how much of each payout to set aside.

Why a site about US taxes?

The United States has far more app drivers than Canada, and its system has the same trap I fell into, only with more moving parts: self-employment tax, quarterly estimated payments, a mileage rate that changed in the middle of 2026, and a brand-new deduction for tips. The core questions are the same on both sides of the border: How much do I owe? How much do I save? What can I deduct?

I am open about the fact that my own filing experience is Canadian. That is why every US figure on this site comes from the IRS or a state revenue department, why each page lists its sources, and why our methodology shows every formula. We also have a section on Canadian gig taxes, where I can speak from direct experience.

What we promise

What we are not

I am not a CPA, enrolled agent, or tax attorney, and this site does not give personal tax advice. The calculators produce estimates for planning. If your situation is complicated (several businesses, a large one-time payment, back taxes, an IRS letter), talk to a licensed tax professional. Read the full disclaimer.
