Gig Worker Tax Calendar: 2026 Tax Year and 2027 Filing Season
For 2026 taxes, the last estimated payment is due January 15, 2027 (you can skip it by filing and paying in full by February 1), your 1099 forms are due to you by February 1, 2027, and the return and any balance are due April 15, 2027. The mileage rate also changed on July 1, 2026, so your log needs two subtotals.
As of October 11, 2026, the tax year is about three-quarters finished and three of the four estimated payment dates have passed. This calendar starts with what is left of 2026, then walks through the 2027 filing season. Dates come from the IRS and the Internal Revenue Code; weekdays were checked against the 2026 and 2027 calendars.

Now to December 2026
October
- October 15: the deadline for 2025 returns on extension. If you are still filing for 2025, note that the tips deduction rules for that year have a transition rule; see the tips deduction guide.
- Catch up on payments. If you missed September 15 or earlier dates, pay now rather than January. The penalty is computed by the day; see the penalty guide and the payment how-to.
- Check your pace. Re-run your year in the 1099 gig tax calculator with real totals through September, and compare what you have paid with the safe-harbor target.
November and December
- Close your books on a cash basis. Pub 334 explains that under the cash method, income counts in the year you actually or constructively receive it, and expenses count in the year you pay them. A payout credited in late December belongs to 2026 even if you transfer it in January.
- Buy what you were going to buy. Business supplies you will use anyway can be bought before December 31 to land in 2026. Do not spend money you would not otherwise spend: a deduction saves only a fraction of each dollar, as the deductions guide shows.
- December 31: photograph the odometer. This closes the second-half subtotal of your mileage log.
- Late December: the IRS announced the 2026 mileage rate on December 29, 2025. Watch for the 2027 announcement.
January 2027
- January 1: photograph the odometer to start the 2027 log. Rates can change mid-year, as they did in 2026, so leave room in your log for a break.
- January 15 (Friday): the fourth estimated payment for 2026. If you plan to file by February 1 and pay everything with your return, you can skip it, but only if you really will file that early and have the money ready.
- Last week of January to February 1: forms arrive. The statutory recipient date is January 31, which falls on a Sunday in 2027, so the next business day is Monday, February 1. Many platforms post them earlier. If a form has not appeared by early February, request it. You still have to report the income. See the 1099 thresholds guide.
February to April 2027
- Reconcile. Compare each form with your own records and write down the reason for any difference. The 2026 forms add separate tip boxes (1099-NEC box 1b, 1099-K box 1c, and a matching occupation code), so check those against your tips.
- Total your miles at 72.5 cents through June 30 and 76 cents from July 1, using the log.
- Work through Schedule C and Schedule SE. The Schedule C and SE walkthrough shows each line.
- Decide: file, or extend. If your return is not ready, file Form 4868 by April 15. The IRS page on extensions says the extension is only for filing and that any tax owed is still due by the April date.
- Pay by April 15. Even with an extension, estimate the balance and pay it. The unpaid tax accrues interest from the due date, and the failure-to-pay penalty accrues monthly at one-half of one percent, up to a cap of 25%.
- April 15, 2027 is also the first 2027 estimated payment. It is a separate payment for a different year. In Direct Pay choose 1040-ES and tax year 2027. The statute sets the 2027 dates as April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year, and the 2027 Form 1040-ES will confirm them.
The mid-year mileage switch
July 1, 2026 was a rare mid-year change. Announcement 2026-11 raised the business rate from 72.5 to 76 cents for expenses paid or incurred on or after July 1. In the engine, 1,000 miles is worth $725 if driven in June and $760 if driven in July. A driver with 9,000 miles in the first half and 10,000 in the second deducts $6,525 plus $7,600, or $14,125 total. The log guide shows how to keep the two subtotals so you never apply one rate to the whole year.
After April 15
Move into the next cycle: set aside a percentage of each payout, record miles weekly, and keep 3 years of records. The IRS general rule in Pub. 463 is to keep records for 3 years from the date you file the return that claims the deduction. General information for tax year 2026, not tax advice. State dates may differ.
Frequently asked questions
When is my 2026 federal tax return due?
April 15, 2027, which is a Thursday. The IRS says an extension gives you until October 15 to file without penalties, so an extended 2026 return is due October 15, 2027. An extension is only for filing, not for paying.
Do I have to pay the January 15 estimated payment?
The Form 1040-ES package says you do not have to make the January 15, 2027 payment if you file your 2026 return by February 1, 2027 and pay the entire balance due with the return.
When will my 1099 arrive?
The recipient-copy date for Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-K is January 31. January 31, 2027 is a Sunday, and the IRS instructions move a date that falls on a weekend to the next business day, so the date is Monday, February 1, 2027. Many companies make forms available earlier, so check your account in January.
What happens if I file an extension but cannot pay?
Interest and a failure-to-pay penalty can apply. Interest compounds daily from the return due date, and the failure-to-pay penalty is one-half of one percent per month or part of a month on the unpaid tax, up to 25%, per IRS Topic 653. Pay what you can by April 15 to limit both.
Is the mileage rate the same all year in 2027?
We do not know yet. The IRS announced the 2026 rate on December 29, 2025, then changed it on July 1, 2026. Watch for the 2027 announcement in December and update your log accordingly.
Do state deadlines match the federal ones?
Not always. Federal dates do not govern your state. If your state has an income tax, check its revenue department for its filing and estimated payment dates.
