Instacart shopper taxes: batch pay, tips, store costs, and your 2026 return

By Jin JeongUpdated Checked against IRS 2026 figures

An Instacart shopper's pay is a bundle: batch pay (which Instacart says includes boosts and heavy-order pay), promotions, and customer tips. For taxes the split matters, because only tips that a customer chose to pay can count for the 2026 tips deduction, and Instacart's own tip protection payment is not one of them. Forms for 2023 and later are reached through the Shopper app, not Stripe, and shopping trips create deductions, such as store parking and bags, that a plain delivery driver does not have.

GigTaxHQ is not affiliated with Instacart. We could read Instacart's shopper earnings page and Stripe's support page about Instacart tax forms, but not the in-app Shopper help center. Where only a third party says something, we say so.

Know which parts of the pay are tips

Pay component (per Instacart)Tax treatment
Batch pay, including boosts and heavy pay of at least $2Business income. Not a tip.
Promotions during high demandBusiness income. Not a tip, because the platform pays it.
Customer tips, which Instacart says shoppers keep in full (split evenly on multi-shopper batches)Business income, and potentially a qualified tip if reported to you on a form.
Tip protection (Instacart covers up to $10 when a customer zeroes a tip with no order issue)Business income. Likely not a qualified tip, since the customer did not pay it.

The final regulations treat a qualified tip as paid voluntarily by the customer and, for 2026, reported on an information return. The IRS occupations list names "grocery delivery driver" under TTOC 804 but does not list personal shoppers or in-store shopping as such. A shopper who delivers fits the delivery entry; a shopper who only picks and hands off in store may not. We cannot resolve that for you, so check the TTOC box on your form and, if unsure, ask a preparer. The tips deduction guide covers the rest.

Where the tax form comes from

Stripe's support page about Instacart says that tax forms for 2023 onward are not available in Stripe Express, and that you access them through the Instacart Shopper app. It says Stripe Express carries only the 2021 and 2022 forms, for shoppers who opted in to e-delivery, and that you edit your tax information in the Shopper app. For 2021 and 2022 it names a $600 test. It names no threshold for later years.

That leaves three things unconfirmed on a page we could read: the exact menu path in the app, the 2026 reporting threshold, and the form's delivery date. The IRS threshold for Form 1099-NEC payments made in 2026 is $2,000, covered in our thresholds guide. Third-party sources say full-service shoppers get a 1099-NEC and in-store shoppers are W-2 employees; a W-2 is wages, and its tax treatment is entirely different, because your employer withholds. Check which form you actually received.

Shopping-trip costs most drivers do not have

Example: a married shopper, spouse on W-2

A couple filing jointly: one spouse earns $52,000 on a W-2 with $3,900 withheld. The other shops for Instacart with $29,500 of gross, $8,100 of it tips (27.5%), 5,400 miles in the first half, 5,800 in the second, and $640 for bags, parking, and a phone mount.

Notice how large the tips deduction is relative to profit: this shopper's tips are 27.5% of gross, so how a tip is reported decides roughly $972 of the bill. See the tips calculator and, for payment timing, the quarterly tax calculator.

General information for tax year 2026, not tax advice.

Shoppers who also deliver for other apps can compare the Walmart Spark driver tax guide and the Amazon Flex tax guide. For state rules on top of the federal bill, see the Georgia guide and North Carolina guide, two flat-rate states that treat tips differently.

Frequently asked questions

Are Instacart shoppers employees or contractors?

Full-service shoppers who deliver orders in their own vehicle are described by third-party tax sources as independent contractors who receive a Form 1099-NEC, while in-store shoppers are described as W-2 employees. We could not confirm this on an Instacart-owned page, so check your own tax form: a W-2 means wages, a 1099 means Schedule C.

Where do I find my Instacart tax form?

Stripe's support site says forms for 2023 onward are not in Stripe Express and must be accessed through the Instacart Shopper app, and that Stripe Express holds only 2021 and 2022 forms. We could not read the Instacart help article itself, so look in the Shopper app and your email first.

What is the 2026 threshold for the form?

Stripe's page gives only a $600 test for 2021 and 2022. The IRS minimum for Form 1099-NEC is $2,000 for tax years beginning after 2025, but we could not find an Instacart page saying what it applies. Report all earnings either way.

Is tip protection money a tip?

Probably not for the deduction. Instacart says it pays up to $10 when a customer zeroes out a tip without reporting an order issue. The regulations require a voluntary payment by the customer, and this is paid by Instacart. Check how it is reported before including it in a tip total.

Can I deduct the cashout fee for instant payouts?

Instacart says instant cashout carries a small fee, while auto-payouts through its Shopper Rewards Card (US) and weekly direct deposit are listed as other options. A fee you pay to get your business income earlier is a business expense you can consider, but confirm it is not already netted from the amount reported on your form.

I shop in store but never drive. Can I deduct mileage?

Only miles you drive in business use. If you pay for parking at a store or buy insulated bags for deliveries, those can be separate expenses. If you walk to a store and never use a vehicle, there is no mileage.

Do I need quarterly payments?

If you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding and credits, usually yes. A spouse's W-2 withholding can sometimes cover it, as in the example.
