Amazon Flex taxes: delivery blocks, fuel, tips, and the 1099-NEC
Amazon tells Flex partners they are independent contractors who pay their own expenses: fuel is not reimbursed, and commercial insurance covers you only during a block. Your income is Schedule C income with nothing withheld, your big deductions are mileage plus tolls and parking, and your tips are small because only tip-eligible deliveries carry them. Third-party guides place the 1099-NEC in Amazon's tax portal, a detail we could not confirm on a Flex page.
GigTaxHQ is not affiliated with Amazon. This guide draws on the Flex FAQ and earnings pages at flex.amazon.com and on IRS sources. Where those pages are silent, we say so rather than guess.
How Flex pay is structured, and why it matters at tax time
- Blocks. You reserve offers for delivery blocks up to a week ahead. Each shows its location, duration, and earnings before you accept. A block is a window of paid time, so some of your working hours (waiting, loading) have no separate mileage.
- Tips. You keep 100 percent of tips on tip-eligible deliveries, which Amazon says typically pay 2 to 3 days after the block.
- Payment day. You choose which weekday or weekdays you are paid. Sunday to Thursday blocks pay on your next chosen day; Friday and Saturday blocks pay Monday or your next chosen day. Cashout to a bank account is free and typically arrives the same or next business day, a faster cashout to a bank or debit card costs 50 cents, and Flex debit card holders can use Instant Pay.
- Promotions. Limited-time promotions can add earnings. They are income, not tips.
Two details here are tax relevant. Payments that straddle New Year's Day belong to the year you receive them under the cash method (see Publication 334), so keep your December and January payout records together. And the 50-cent cashout fee on a faster payout is a small business expense, if your form is not already net of it.
Where to look for your form
Amazon's Flex pages we read do not mention tax forms; the FAQ only says you provide tax and payment details when you sign up. Third-party tax guides say Flex drivers get a Form 1099-NEC at taxcentral.amazon.com, Amazon's tax portal (which requires an Amazon sign-in), by January 31. We confirmed the portal exists but not that it is the Flex route. If you cannot find a form, look in the Flex app, then Flex support. For payments made in 2026 the IRS threshold for Form 1099-NEC is $2,000; third-party guides still say $600, which was the 2025 rule. Our thresholds guide explains.
One reconciliation point that is unique to Flex: if you earned tips in blocks that were paid in different weeks, add the payout history rather than relying on a single figure. And remember the form reports gross. Mileage, tolls, and parking appear nowhere on it.
Mileage on block work
The standard rate is 72.5 cents through June and 76 cents from July 1. For a Flex route the miles that matter are:
- Station to first stop, between stops, and the last stop back to the station if your block ends with a return. These are clearly business trips.
- Home to the station. A gray area. Publication 463 treats travel between home and a regular place of work as commuting. A delivery station you visit every block may look like a regular work location, or like the first business contact. We cannot settle it for you; log these miles in their own column and decide with a tax professional.
- Waiting and loading time. Not miles, but a reminder that the money in a block is for hours, not only distance.
The mileage log guide covers what a record must contain. Use the delivery offer profit calculator to compare a block's pay with its mileage and time before you accept.
Amazon-specific costs
| Cost | What Amazon's FAQ says | Tax effect |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | Not reimbursed. The Flex debit card offers up to 6 percent cash back on fuel and EV charging, by rewards level. | Inside the standard mileage rate. If you use actual expenses, track it, and ask a preparer about the cash back. |
| Tolls and parking | Not mentioned as reimbursed. | Deductible on top of the standard rate if you paid them. |
| Commercial insurance | Provided at no cost except in New York, and only during a block. | No premium paid, so no deduction. Extra New York coverage is yours to claim for business use. |
| Phone and data | Not covered | Business-use share of the bill and device. |
Example: a single Flex driver, no other job
A single filer with $38,000 of Flex gross, $1,200 of it tips, 7,000 miles January to June, 7,600 July to December, and $2,100 for tolls, parking, phone, and supplies.
- Mileage deduction: $10,851.00 on 14,600 miles, which is 28.6% of gross
- Net profit: $25,049.00
- Self-employment tax: $3,539.31; total federal tax $4,017.66
- Tips deduction: $1,200.00, a saving of only $96.00
- Set aside from each payout: 10.6%, about $1,004.41 per quarter
The tips are only 3.2% of gross, so the deduction is minor compared with the mileage. For a Flex driver, a good mileage log and receipts for tolls and parking matter more than the tips box. The penalty guide shows how to avoid the underpayment charge.
General information for tax year 2026, not tax advice.
If you also shop or deliver for grocery apps, the Instacart shopper tax guide and Walmart Spark driver tax guide cover how those apps report pay. State rules differ: the Texas guide covers a state with no income tax, while the Illinois guide covers a flat rate with no state tips deduction.
Frequently asked questions
Is an Amazon Flex driver an employee?
Amazon's Flex FAQ says delivery partners are independent contractors responsible for their own expenses. That makes your income self-employment income reported on Schedule C, with no tax withheld by Amazon.
Where do I get my Amazon Flex 1099?
Third-party guides say the 1099-NEC is available through Amazon's tax portal at taxcentral.amazon.com, which requires an Amazon sign-in, by January 31. We could not confirm that on a Flex page: the Flex FAQ and earnings pages we read do not mention tax forms. Check the Flex app and that portal, then contact Flex support if you cannot find it.
Does the insurance Amazon provides give me a deduction?
Amazon's FAQ says it provides commercial auto insurance at no cost in all states except New York, only while you are actively delivering during a block. Since you do not pay that premium, there is nothing to deduct for it. Your personal auto policy and any extra coverage New York drivers need are separate costs.
Are fuel and tolls reimbursed?
The FAQ says fuel is not reimbursed and does not mention reimbursement for mileage, parking, or tolls. If you use the standard mileage rate, fuel is already inside it, but tolls and parking you actually paid can be deducted on top. Keep receipts.
When do tips arrive, and does that affect my tax year?
Amazon says tip-eligible blocks typically pay 2 to 3 days after completion because customers have 24 hours to update tips. A block at the end of December can therefore pay in January. Which year it falls in on your return and on a form depends on when you were paid and how Amazon reports it, so compare your December payouts with the form.
Do all Amazon Flex deliveries have tips?
No. The FAQ says you keep 100 percent of tips on tip-eligible deliveries, and offers show an earnings range or "$XX + tips" for those. Blocks that are not tip-eligible have none, which is why many Flex drivers have a small tips share.
Does cash back from the Flex debit card count as income?
We could not find a statement from Amazon on tax treatment of rewards or cash back, so we cannot say. Ask a tax professional, and keep a record of anything you received.
